Black mold in Jumeirah bathroom: DIY clean or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed black mold spreading along the grout in the master bathroom shower and on the ceiling. It’s been worse since the humidity started rising a couple of months ago. Is this something I can handle myself with a cleaner from ACE Hardware, or should I call a professional company for an inspection and quote, and what’s the typical cost range for that here?

Small black spots on grout are common here and can often be managed with a dedicated mould remover from any hardware store. For a two-year buildup, you'll need a product specifically for mould, not just a general cleaner. Apply it, let it sit per the instructions, scrub, and rinse thoroughly.

However, the presence on the ceiling is a more significant concern. This often indicates a persistent humidity issue or a potential leak in the ceiling void, especially in a villa. Since it's worsened with recent humidity, the root cause is likely condensation from your AC system or inadequate ventilation. Simply cleaning it will not stop it from returning; the underlying moisture problem must be addressed.

For a spreading issue on a non-porous ceiling surface, a professional assessment is recommended. They can identify if the mould has penetrated the ceiling board (which may require replacement) and locate the source of the moisture, be it an AC condensate drain issue, lack of exhaust fan use, or a leak. In Dubai's climate, this is a constant battle, and a pro can provide a long-term solution.

The cost for an inspection and quote varies significantly. It is primarily driven by the extent of the infestation and the investigative work needed to find the moisture source. You can expect a basic assessment to be a standard fee, while a comprehensive diagnosis involving moisture meters and lab identification of the mould type will be more involved. Always request a detailed scope of work and quote in writing before any remediation begins.
