Is black AC mold in Dubai a DIY fix or professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making us cough for a couple of months now, and I finally pulled the filter out to check. The back of it is covered in this black, powdery dust and the area around the vent looks dirty. I'm worried it's mold from the humidity. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or do I need to call a professional company for an inspection?

Black powdery dust on AC filters in Dubai is extremely common due to our high humidity and year-round AC use, which creates constant condensation inside units. While some of it is harmless soot from outdoor pollution, it often contains mold spores that thrive in this damp environment.
For a small amount of surface dust on a removable filter, you can vacuum it gently and wash it with a diluted detergent solution, not bleach. Bleach fumes can become airborne through the AC and are not effective on porous surfaces. However, if the substance is on the back of the filter and the vent area is visibly dirty, the contamination is likely inside the ductwork or evaporator coil, which is not a DIY job. Professional inspection is strongly recommended in your case, especially since occupants are experiencing coughing. The goal is to identify the species and source of the contamination. In Dubai, a proper inspection involves a borescope examination of the internal evaporator coil and ductwork, not just looking at the filter. This determines if the growth is superficial or has penetrated the system, guiding the correct remediation method. Companies with their own microbiology labs can provide culture-based identification, which is crucial for understanding health risks and verifying that cleanup was effective. |
