Should I handle bedroom mold myself or call landlord?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoe boxes. It must have been growing slowly because the room has felt damp for a while, but I only spotted it today while cleaning. The closet is on an interior wall in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle. What's the best way to handle this myself, or should I call my landlord first?

In Dubai's climate, interior wall mold like yours is often caused by condensation from AC units or a small, hidden leak. The first step is to notify your landlord in writing immediately, as per standard Dubai tenancy contracts. This creates a formal record and makes the repair their responsibility, especially if the cause is structural.

For a patch smaller than one square foot, you can clean it yourself if you are not sensitive to mold. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then wipe it down with a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to ten parts water). Let the area dry completely. However, this only addresses the visible growth, not the underlying moisture source.

Given you've felt dampness for a while, the issue is likely more serious than surface condensation. The mold behind the boxes is just the visible part. There could be more extensive growth inside the wall cavity. A professional inspection with a moisture meter and borescope camera is needed to find the true source of the water intrusion, which is critical for a permanent fix. In many JVC apartments, this is due to leaking AC drain lines or cracks in the building envelope. Your landlord should arrange for both the leak repair and proper remediation.
