Is this black mold behind my wardrobe toxic?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month, and my own allergies are going crazy in our master bedroom. We’re in an older building in Jumeirah, and I’ve just noticed a patch of black spots behind the wardrobe that wasn't there before the last bout of humid weather. Is this likely to be toxic mold and how do I find a proper inspector to test it?

The black spots behind your wardrobe are likely mold, but "toxic" is a misleading term. The color doesn't definitively identify the species; many black-colored molds are common allergenic types like Cladosporium or Aspergillus, not the more notorious Stachybotrys ("black mold"). In Dubai's humid climate, especially in older Jumeirah buildings with less insulation, condensation behind furniture is a common catalyst for growth. This trapped moisture, combined with year-round AC use creating temperature differentials, creates an ideal environment for mold.

The persistent coughing and allergy symptoms you describe are a significant indicator that this mold colony is actively releasing spores into your bedroom's air, acting as a respiratory irritant. This is a serious health concern, particularly for children.

You need a proper mold inspection. Avoid companies that only do a visual assessment. A credible inspector in the UAE will use a combination of moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden source of the dampness—often a leaking pipe in the wall, capillary rise from the slab, or condensation—and then take air and surface samples for lab analysis. The lab report is crucial; it identifies the exact species present and their concentrations, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol.

Do not disturb the area before testing, as this can release a large number of spores. When seeking an inspector, ask directly if their process includes third-party, accredited laboratory analysis and if they provide a detailed report interpreting the results. Any reputable provider will be transparent about their methodology and should be able to explain Dubai Municipality's guidelines for indoor environmental quality.
