How to safely remove mold from AC vent?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our villa in Al Barsha has been making my youngest son's room feel damp and he's been waking up with a stuffy nose and a cough for the past two weeks. I pulled his bed away from the wall yesterday and found a patch of black mold hidden behind it, near the AC vent. What's the safest way to clean this up myself without making his allergies worse, and should I be calling the landlord about the AC unit itself?

Black mold near an AC vent indicates a condensation issue, which is common in Dubai's humid climate where ACs run constantly. The safest way to handle a small patch (under one square foot) is to wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water—avoid bleach as it can irritate airways and doesn't prevent regrowth. Scrub the area gently, dry it completely, and dispose of all cleaning materials outdoors.

However, cleaning the visible spot is only a temporary fix. The mold behind the wall is a symptom of excess moisture from the AC unit itself, likely a clogged drain line or poor insulation causing condensation. This requires addressing the source.

You should absolutely inform your landlord. Under typical Dubai rental agreements, landlords are responsible for the maintenance of central AC systems and any damage they cause. Request that they send a certified HVAC technician to inspect and service the unit, clear the drain line, and check for moisture in the ductwork. For health safety, a professional mold inspection is recommended to assess if spores have spread into the wall cavity, which is common in such cases.
