Safe DIY black mold removal with kids in house?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks now, and I just found patches of black mold behind their bedroom wardrobe, which is against an exterior wall in our villa in Jumeirah. It must have been growing there since the humidity spiked last month and I'm really worried about their health. What is the most effective and safe way to remove this mold myself, considering I have young children in the house?

For a small patch (under one square foot) behind the wardrobe, you can attempt DIY removal with extreme caution. Given the location against an exterior wall in Jumeirah, this is likely condensation mold from the temperature differential between the air-conditioned room and the humid outdoor air, a very common issue here.

First, isolate the area. Keep your children completely away from the room during the process and for several hours after. You will need an N95 mask, nitrile gloves, and protective goggles to avoid inhaling or touching spores. Open a window for ventilation if possible.

Mix a solution of one part detergent-free bleach to four parts water. Do not mix with other cleaners. Apply with a stiff-bristled brush, scrubbing the mold off the wall. After scrubbing, wipe the area clean with a damp cloth and allow it to dry thoroughly. A fan can help accelerate drying.

However, DIY is only addressing the visible growth. The root cause is excess moisture in that wall cavity. Since the mold is behind furniture on an exterior wall, the problem is often more extensive inside the wall than what is visible. For health concerns like persistent child coughing, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the full extent and identify the moisture source. They can use moisture meters and borescopes to see inside the wall. In many villas, this requires addressing insulation gaps or AC condensation issues. Proper remediation involves containing the area to prevent spore spread throughout your home, which is difficult to achieve DIY.
