How to remove black mold from bedroom closet wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, on the wall that faces the outside. It wasn't there during my last cleanup a few months ago, but with all the humidity lately, it's really appeared. I'm worried it's spreading behind the clothes. What's the most effective way to clean this myself, or should I call a professional company in Dubai right away?

Black mold in a closet on an exterior wall is a classic sign of condensation due to the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the hot, humid air outside. Dubai's climate makes this a very common issue.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and does not address the moisture source. Dry the area completely with a fan immediately after cleaning.

However, since this appeared suddenly and is on an exterior wall, the moisture source is likely persistent. The mold may be growing within the wall cavity itself, which you cannot see or effectively treat. Professional assessment is strongly recommended in this case to identify the root cause, which could be insufficient insulation, a tiny crack, or internal condensation. A proper inspection, often involving moisture meters and thermal imaging, can determine the extent of the problem behind the wall.

To prevent recurrence, improve air circulation in the closet by not overpacking it and leaving the door ajar occasionally. A small desiccant dehumidifier inside the closet can also help manage the micro-climate. If the problem returns after cleaning, or you experience any health symptoms, a professional remediation company with the equipment to diagnose and address hidden moisture is the necessary next step.
