Possible mold causing kids' cough in Dubai - first step?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and we can't figure out why. I've just pulled out a few of our winter clothes from the back of the wardrobe in our master bedroom and found dark, fuzzy patches on a couple of leather bags and the wall behind them. We live in an older building in Jumeirah and I'm terrified this is the cause. What's the first step I should take for a proper mold inspection here in Dubai?

Stop using the wardrobe immediately and keep the bedroom door closed to prevent spore dispersal. In Dubai's climate, hidden mold behind furniture is common due to high humidity and condensation on exterior walls, especially in older Jumeirah buildings with year-round AC use.

The first step is a visual assessment by a certified mold inspector. They will look for the moisture source—often a small plumbing leak, AC condensate drain issue, or penetrating damp from our humid air. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as disturbing it can release a large number of spores and exacerbate your children's respiratory symptoms.

A proper inspection here includes moisture mapping with professional tools and air/surface sampling. The samples must be analyzed by an accredited microbiology lab to identify the species, as this determines the health risk and required remediation protocol. This lab report is crucial; it provides the evidence needed to engage your building management for repairs, as they are typically responsible for the building envelope and common plumbing under Dubai regulations.
