Is black mold urgent or can wait until Monday?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an outside wall. It’s been humid lately and I’m worried it’s spreading behind the clothes. My main concern is whether this is something I need to get a professional to handle immediately this weekend, or if it’s okay to wait and call the building maintenance on Monday?

Black mold requires immediate attention but not necessarily panic. Given Dubai's high humidity and your closet's location on an outside wall, this is likely due to condensation forming where the cold interior wall meets the warm, humid outdoor air. The primary urgency is to stop its growth and prevent it from spreading into the wall cavity.
For this weekend, move all clothing and items away from the affected corner. Wipe the visible patch with a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water, then dry the area thoroughly. Run a dehumidifier or your AC continuously to lower the indoor humidity below 60%, which will help slow its growth. Do not attempt to scrub it aggressively, as this can release spores. While building maintenance can address the surface issue, a professional inspection is recommended to diagnose the root cause. In many cases here, the problem is a thermal bridge in the wall or inadequate insulation, leading to chronic condensation that maintenance may not fully resolve. A certified inspector can use a moisture meter to check for hidden dampness inside the wall and recommend proper remediation. Calling maintenance on Monday is acceptable for a first step, but be prepared that their solution might be superficial. If the mold returns, or if you have health concerns like asthma or allergies, seek a specialist who can provide a full assessment and verify the cleanup with post-remediation testing. |
