Black mold behind wardrobe: DIY or call management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. It's been really humid lately and the room feels damp all the time. What's the best way to deal with this ourselves, or should we just call our building management immediately?

Black mold spreading on a wall in a humid Jumeirah bedroom is a serious indicator of a moisture problem that needs immediate attention. The damp feeling confirms high humidity levels, likely exacerbated by our climate and year-round AC use creating condensation.

For a case this advanced, DIY cleaning is not recommended. Disturbing the mold by moving the wardrobe can release a large number of spores into your living space. Over-the-counter sprays often only bleach the visible growth, leaving the root colony intact to regrow. Your first call should be to your building management. Under Dubai regulations, the structural integrity of the building envelope and leaks from common areas like AC condensation lines are their responsibility. Report it immediately and request an inspection to identify the moisture source—it could be a hidden pipe leak or seepage from outside.

While you wait for their response, improve air circulation in the room by running an exhaust fan or opening a window if possible, and keep the AC on to help reduce humidity. Do not attempt to scrub or treat the area yourself.

If the building management is slow to respond or attributes the cause to internal condensation, a professional indoor environmental assessment is the next step. An inspector can use moisture meters to pinpoint the water source and take tape-lift samples for lab analysis to confirm the mold type. This data is crucial for determining the correct remediation protocol, which often involves removing the affected section of drywall. Proper containment and air scrubbing during the process are essential to prevent cross-contamination, which is why professional remediation is advised for any growth covering more than a few square feet.
