Urgent to remove bedroom mold or DIY first?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our villa in Al Barsha has had this damp, earthy smell since the last round of humidity. I finally moved the wardrobe away from the wall yesterday and found a patch of black and green mold, about the size of a dinner plate, spreading behind it. With summer coming, I’m worried it’s just going to get worse. How urgent is it to get this professionally removed, and is it something I can handle myself first?

The urgency depends on the moisture source. In Dubai's climate, a patch that size behind furniture is a clear sign of condensation or a hidden leak, often from the AC system or external humidity. It needs immediate attention to prevent it from spreading into the wall structure.
For a first step, you can address a very small surface patch yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Move the furniture to allow maximum airflow. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water, lightly spray the visible growth, and gently wipe it away. Do not scrub aggressively, as this can release spores. Let the area dry completely. A dehumidifier in the room can help. However, DIY is often a temporary fix. The critical step is identifying and stopping the moisture source. In Al Barsha villas, this is frequently due to thermal bridging in external walls causing condensation, a faulty AC drain line, or a small leak. If the mold returns within a few days, which is common here, or if there's any staining or softening of the drywall, professional assessment is needed. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the root cause, which is essential for a permanent solution. For a patch that size and given the villa's construction, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to prevent it from becoming a larger, concealed problem. |
