Can I remove small mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It must have been growing slowly from all the humidity. I'm worried about my family's health and the cost. For a small area like this, is it something I can tackle myself with bleach from the supermarket, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

Small patches under one square meter can often be handled DIY, but the location and climate require caution. The UAE's high humidity, especially during summer months, creates ideal conditions for mold, and it often grows due to condensation from AC units or hidden moisture.

For a small area like your closet, first move all items out and ensure the space is well-ventilated. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Do not use bleach; it is mostly water and can feed residual mold roots. Instead, use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner or a solution of white vinegar and water. Scrub the area thoroughly, let it dry completely, and then monitor it for several weeks for any regrowth.

However, a professional inspection is strongly recommended in your case. The visible patch behind boxes is likely just the fruiting body; the underlying moisture source and any hidden spread within the wall cavity need to be identified and addressed. In Dubai villas, this often traces back to AC condensation line leaks, roof leaks, or rising damp. A certified inspector uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the root cause. Without fixing that, it will return. For health safety, they can also take a sample for lab analysis to confirm the species, as some types common in humid climates require more stringent containment during removal.
