Is AC mold making us sick? Urgent?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a really damp, earthy smell, especially in the master bedroom. I just pulled the vent cover off and found what looks like black fuzzy mold all around the inside of the duct. We've had the AC running non-stop for months because of the heat. How urgent is it that I get this professionally cleaned, and could this be making us sick?

That damp, earthy smell is a classic indicator of microbial growth, and visible black mold inside the duct confirms it. In Dubai's climate, where ACs run constantly, the cold evaporator coil creates significant condensation, providing the perfect damp environment for mold to thrive when combined with dust for food.

It is very likely contributing to health symptoms, especially in the bedroom where you're exposed for hours. Common effects include persistent congestion, sneezing, sore throat, and worsened allergies or asthma. The risk is higher for children, elderly, or anyone with respiratory sensitivities.

This situation warrants professional attention. DIY cleaning the vent cover is surface-level; the growth is likely extensive on the coil and deep within the ductwork, which requires specialized equipment to address properly. The UAE's high humidity means it will quickly return without a complete remediation.

You should arrange for a certified mold inspection. A proper assessment involves using a borescope to inspect the hidden ducts and often includes air or swab sampling sent to an independent microbiology lab to identify the species. This determines the actual health risk and the required scope of cleaning. Companies with their own labs can provide this diagnostic data, which is crucial for verifying the problem is solved, not just hidden. Until then, consider limiting use of that specific AC unit if possible.
