Best long-term solution for recurring black mold in closet?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that keeps coming back in our master bedroom closet in Jumeirah. We had a professional clean it last winter, but after this summer's humidity, it's back again on the leather jackets and shoes we store in there. What's the best long-term solution to stop this for good, like a specific dehumidifier or treatment for the walls?

Black mold recurrence in closets is common here due to Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use creating condensation. The leather items themselves are likely feeding the mold. The previous cleaning only addressed surface growth, not the underlying moisture source or the spores embedded in porous materials.

First, remove all affected items from the closet. Leather, shoes, and cardboard boxes are prime food sources; consider storing them in sealed containers elsewhere. Wipe down all interior surfaces with a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution, but this is a temporary fix.

The core issue is excess moisture. A small, standalone desiccant dehumidifier designed for enclosed spaces is the most effective solution. Place it inside the closet and empty its reservoir regularly. Ensure the closet isn't crowded, as air needs to circulate. Check if the AC vent is directly blowing cold air onto that wall, as the temperature differential causes condensation inside the wall cavity.

For a permanent solution, a professional inspection is necessary. They can identify if the issue is a lack of vapor barrier in the external wall (common in older Jumeirah villas), inadequate insulation, or a hidden plumbing leak. The remediation must include applying an antimicrobial coating to the walls after the moisture source is controlled to prevent regrowth. Without addressing the structural cause, the mold will likely return each summer.
