How to properly remove mold in humid Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. It's been really humid lately and I'm worried it's mold. What's the best way to deal with this properly in Dubai, and should I call the building management or handle it myself?

Move the wardrobe away from the wall immediately to allow air circulation and assess the full extent. The high humidity in Dubai, especially during summer and in areas near the coast like Jumeirah, creates perfect conditions for mold growth behind furniture where air doesn't circulate.
For a small area (less than one square meter), you can clean it yourself with a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, given its location behind a wardrobe and the fact it's spreading, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the moisture source. This could be a hidden condensation issue from your AC, a seepage problem from an adjacent bathroom, or even a minor leak in the wall. In Dubai, building management is typically responsible for structural issues like external water seepage or leaks from common pipes. You should report it to them first. They are obligated to address problems that affect the building's integrity. For internal sources of moisture or the actual mold remediation, that is usually the tenant's or owner's responsibility. A proper remediation involves more than just wiping the surface; it requires identifying and correcting the moisture source, isolating the area to prevent spores from spreading, physically removing the contaminated material, and verifying with post-remediation testing that the space is truly clean. Given the climate, simply cleaning without fixing the root cause will guarantee it returns. |
