How to remove black mold and check AC ducts?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we moved the furniture to rearrange the room. The wall feels slightly damp to the touch, and it's on the exterior wall facing the direction of the sea. What's the best way to treat this myself to make sure it doesn't come back, and should I be worried about it being inside the AC ducts too?

Black mold growth on exterior walls is common in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation that forms when cool interior air meets warm exterior walls. The dampness you feel confirms an active moisture issue.

For a small area, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the spot with a mixture of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover. However, simply cleaning it will not prevent its return. The wall must be completely dried, and the source of the moisture identified and fixed. This often requires professional-grade dehumidifiers and moisture meters to find the root cause, which could be a small leak or penetrating damp from outside.

Given the symptoms you describe and the location on an exterior wall, it is highly advisable to have a professional inspection. They can assess the wall's moisture content and check for mold inside the cavity, which is common in such cases. For your AC, it is possible spores have circulated. Duct inspection typically requires a borescope camera; a reputable inspector can perform this to check for growth without making assumptions.

In Dubai, remediation standards require containment of the affected area to prevent cross-contamination. A proper assessment will determine if this is necessary. For your family's health, identifying the species through a lab test can clarify the risk level, especially with children experiencing respiratory issues.
