How to remove mold and prevent it in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids' bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has had this damp, earthy smell since the weather cooled down in December, and I just found a patch of black spots behind their heavy wardrobe. We run the AC but it's clearly not enough. What's the most effective way to kill the existing mold and what dehumidifier or air purifier do you recommend to stop it from coming back?

That damp, earthy smell is a classic indicator of a mold issue, and finding it behind furniture is very common in Dubai's climate. The high humidity, especially during the cooler months, combines with condensation from AC units and poor air circulation behind large items like wardrobes to create the perfect environment for mold growth.

For the existing patch, first move the wardrobe to isolate the area. For a small patch (less than one square meter), you can carefully clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area with a microfiber cloth and a solution of detergent and warm water. Avoid bleach, as it only surface cleans and doesn't address the root cause. After cleaning, ensure the wall is completely dry. Discard any cloths used immediately.

However, the visible mold is often just the tip of the iceberg. Its root system can penetrate porous materials like drywall and plaster. The most effective long-term solution is to identify and eliminate the moisture source. In your case, the lack of air circulation is a major contributor. Reposition furniture at least six inches away from walls to allow air to flow. Ensure your AC unit is set to a consistent, cool temperature to reduce condensation and is properly maintained with clean filters.

A dehumidifier is highly recommended for a villa bedroom in Jumeirah. Look for a unit with a capacity suitable for the room's size, measured in pints per day. A unit with a built-in hygrometer that automatically turns on when humidity exceeds 50-55% is ideal. For air purifiers, a True HEPA filter is essential for capturing mold spores, and a unit with an activated carbon filter will help reduce the musty odor.

Given the discovery and the persistent smell, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can use moisture meters to find hidden dampness and may recommend air or surface sampling to identify the mold species, which is crucial for understanding any potential health risks and ensuring the remediation plan is complete. This is the best way to ensure the health of your indoor environment, especially with children present.
