Shoudl i call a pro for black, smelly grout?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bedroom closet in Jumeirah has started turning black over the last couple of weeks, and it has a really damp, earthy smell. I'm worried it's spreading behind the walls because my clothes are starting to smell musty. Is this something I need to call a professional about immediately, or can I handle it myself with bleach and a scrub this weekend?

Black grout with a damp, earthy smell and musty clothes indicates active mold growth, likely due to high humidity. In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue, especially in enclosed spaces like closets where air circulation is poor and condensation can form.

Using bleach is not recommended. It's mostly water on the surface, which the mold can feed on, and it won't address the root moisture problem or the hyphae (root structures) growing deep within the porous grout. You'll likely see it return quickly. Scrubbing can also aerosolize spores, potentially spreading them further.

The musty smell on your clothes suggests the mold is already airborne and has colonized other materials. This is a strong indicator the issue may be more widespread than just the surface grout, possibly spreading behind the tiles or into the wall cavity. Given these signs, a professional inspection is advised. They use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the extent of the problem behind walls without unnecessary demolition. The goal is to identify and rectify the source of the moisture—be it a small plumbing leak, condensation from an AC duct, or humidity from inadequate ventilation.

For a small, surface-level issue, a thorough cleaning with a dedicated EPA-approved fungicide might suffice. However, with the odor permeating your belongings and the rapid reappearance, a professional assessment will provide a definitive answer on the scope and necessary remediation steps to protect your property and health.
