DIY or professional for Jumeirah villa shower mold?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed black mold spreading along the grout in the master bathroom shower. It's gotten worse since the humidity kicked in last month, and I'm worried it's behind the tiles. I got one quote for a full removal and re-grouting that seemed really high. Is this a DIY job with bleach, or should I definitely hire a professional? What's a reasonable price to fix something like this in Dubai?

It depends on the extent. For surface mold on grout lines in a two-year-old villa, a DIY approach is often worth trying first, especially given Dubai's high humidity which makes this a recurring issue.
Start with a dedicated grout mold cleaner or a paste of baking soda and vinegar; bleach only lightens the color and doesn't kill the root structure. Scrub thoroughly. If the mold returns within a few weeks, it's a strong indicator of a deeper issue, likely moisture trapped behind the tiles from a leak or insufficient sealing. A full removal and re-grouting quote is high because the real cost isn't in scrubbing—it's in the potential for structural damage. If the mold is widespread, persistently returns, or you suspect it's behind the tiles, a professional assessment is critical. They can use moisture meters and borescopes to see behind the wall without unnecessary demolition. In many Dubai villas, the underlying cause is a failed shower membrane or chronic condensation from AC systems battling the external humidity. For a proper remediation, expect costs to vary significantly based on the square footage and whether tile removal is required to address the root moisture problem. Always request a detailed assessment that explains the cause, not just the visible symptom. |
