How to prevent mold in UAE bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has developed black spots on the leather bags and shoes we stored there. We run the AC constantly but the room still feels a bit damp, and this is the second time it's happened in the past year. What's the most effective way to prevent this mold from coming back, should we get a dehumidifier or is there a better solution for UAE homes?

The dampness and recurring mold in your closet point to a consistent humidity problem, which is common in UAE bedrooms with constant AC use. The AC cools the air but may not be running long enough in that specific room to remove sufficient moisture, especially on an interior wall with less air circulation.

First, move all affected items out and clean the closet with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold cleaner. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface stain and does not kill the mold roots. For leather goods, a professional cleaner is best to prevent permanent damage.

The most effective prevention is addressing the root cause: high humidity. A dehumidifier is a strong solution, but ensure it's correctly sized for the room's volume. A more integrated approach is to improve air circulation. Leave the closet doors open periodically and use a small, low-wattage fan inside to keep air moving. Check that the room's AC vent is not blocked and is directing air into the space effectively.

For a persistent issue like this, a professional inspection is recommended to rule out a hidden problem, such as a small plumbing leak in the wall or inadequate insulation causing condensation. They can use a moisture meter to pinpoint the source. Ultimately, maintaining indoor humidity levels below 60% is key to preventing regrowth.
