How to remove mold on exterior wall in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe, which is on an exterior wall facing the marina. It’s gotten much worse since the humidity spiked last month. What’s the most effective way to deal with this mold in Dubai, and should I call a professional company or is this something I can handle myself with a good cleaner?

That black mold behind your wardrobe on an exterior wall is a classic Dubai issue, especially facing the marina with high humidity. The wall is likely colder than the indoor air, causing condensation to form behind the furniture where air doesn't circulate, creating a perfect breeding ground for mold.

For a small patch (less than one square meter), you can attempt cleaning yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Move the wardrobe away from the wall. Use a mixture of one part white vinegar to one part water or a diluted bleach solution (1 cup bleach to 1 gallon of water) to scrub the area. Let the solution sit for 15 minutes before wiping clean. The key is to dry the wall completely immediately after cleaning; use a fan or dehumidifier directed at the spot for several hours.

However, given that it's spreading and located on an exterior wall, this often indicates a more persistent moisture problem that DIY cleaning won't solve. The mold growth you see is likely just the surface manifestation; the root cause could be capillary action drawing moisture through the wall or a minor crack in the building envelope. DIY cleaning will remove the visible stain but the mold will almost certainly return within a few weeks if the underlying dampness isn't identified and resolved.

This is where a professional assessment is recommended. A reputable inspector will use a moisture meter to quantify the dampness within the wall itself and can identify the exact source of the water intrusion. They can also take a tape lift sample for lab analysis to confirm the mold type, which dictates the proper remediation protocol. For exterior wall issues in Dubai's climate, the most effective long-term solution usually involves addressing the building's waterproofing or insulation in addition to the interior surface cleaning.
