Black mold in damp bedroom closet: DIY or call management?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and it feels slightly damp. With all the humidity lately, I'm worried it's spreading. What's the best way to handle this myself, or should I call my building management first?

Start by moving the storage boxes away from the wall to allow air circulation. The dampness on an exterior wall suggests condensation, a frequent issue in Dubai's climate due to the stark contrast between indoor AC cooling and outdoor heat/humidity.
For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear a mask and gloves. Use a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water or a diluted detergent; avoid bleach as it only removes the color, not the mold. Scrub the area, dry it thoroughly, and use a fan to increase airflow. However, since the wall feels damp, the moisture source is likely still active. You should also inform your building management. In the UAE, building owners and management are typically responsible for the structural integrity of the property, including addressing moisture infiltration from outside. The damp exterior wall could indicate a need for sealing or insulation repairs that only they can authorize. A professional inspection is recommended to diagnose the hidden cause—this could be a leaking pipe, capillary rise from the foundation, or a thermal bridge in the wall. Without addressing the root moisture problem, the mold will almost certainly return, even after cleaning. |
