How to permanently remove mold from behind wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. It's gotten worse since the weather turned more humid last month. What's the best way to get rid of this mold for good without having to replace the entire wall?

The black spots spreading behind your wardrobe are a classic Dubai issue, caused by a combination of high humidity and a cold wall creating condensation. The wall behind furniture is a dead air zone where moisture gets trapped, allowing mold to thrive.
First, move the wardrobe away from the wall to fully expose the area and allow air to circulate. For cleaning, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Do not simply wipe it, as this can aerosolize spores. Scrub the affected area with a mixture of water and detergent or a dedicated mold remover, then thoroughly dry the surface. However, this only addresses surface mold. The critical step is identifying and stopping the moisture source. In many Dubai buildings, this is condensation on an exterior wall due to the extreme temperature differential between the air-conditioned room and the hot, humid outside air. Simply cleaning without fixing this will result in the mold returning. To prevent recurrence, you must improve ventilation. Keep the wardrobe permanently several inches away from the wall. Use a dehumidifier in the room, especially during the more humid months, to keep relative humidity below 60%. Ensure your AC unit is functioning correctly, as it acts as your primary dehumidifier. For a widespread or recurring problem, the mold may have penetrated the plasterboard or paint. A professional inspection is recommended to assess the wall's integrity and the mold species. Companies with their own microbiology labs can take samples to identify the root cause and verify the wall is truly dry and remediated after cleaning, which is the only way to ensure a permanent solution. |
