How to remove mold from closet and who to call?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind all the clothes. It’s gotten way worse since the humidity kicked in last month. What’s the most effective way to deal with mold on the walls here, and should I be calling my building management first or a professional cleaning company?

Start by moving everything out of the closet to assess the full extent and prevent cross-contamination. The rapid spread confirms this is an active moisture issue, very common here during humid months. For a small area (under one square meter), you can carefully clean it yourself with a microfiber cloth and a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, ensuring you wear an N95 mask and gloves. However, since the mold is behind items and spreading, the underlying cause is likely inside the wall cavity—perhaps a small AC condensate drain leak or insulation issue causing condensation.

You should notify your building management first. Under Dubai regulations, the structural integrity of the building and hidden internal systems are the responsibility of the owner or management. They need to investigate and repair the source of the moisture, which is absolutely critical. Simply cleaning the visible mold without fixing the leak is a temporary solution.

For the remediation itself, a professional cleaning company with specific mold expertise is recommended, especially since the growth is extensive and located near your clothing. They will use containment procedures and HEPA filtration to prevent spores from dispersing into your living space during cleaning. The most effective approach is a combination of identifying the moisture source (which management should handle) and proper remediation of the affected materials. A reputable provider can also take samples for lab analysis to confirm the mold type, which helps in tailoring the removal process and verifying that the environment is safe after cleanup. In Dubai's climate, with year-round AC use and high humidity, a professional assessment is often the most effective long-term solution.
