Is black mold a DIY job or professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a weird, damp odor and I just found patches of black, fuzzy stuff on the back wall of the wardrobe where it's always cold. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, and my husband thinks we can just spray it with bleach ourselves. Is this a DIY job or do we absolutely need to call a professional cleaning company to handle it?

Black mold in Dubai is rarely a DIY job, especially when linked to an AC system and hidden condensation. The damp odor from your AC and the mold on that cold wall are connected—the wall is likely a cold bridge where humid air condenses, creating a perpetual moisture source. Bleach is a surface-level fix; it may remove the visible color but often leaves the root mold structure intact. More critically, it doesn't address the underlying moisture problem, so regrowth is almost certain.

In the UAE's high humidity, AC systems are the primary climate control and a common source of hidden moisture issues from clogged drain lines or poor insulation. Spraying bleach can also agitate the spores, releasing more into the air for the AC to circulate throughout your apartment. For a case involving an AC odor and structural condensation, a professional inspection is advised to identify the moisture source and assess the extent.

The Dubai Municipality has clear guidelines for mold remediation in buildings to ensure it is handled comprehensively. Professionals use containment, HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial treatments approved for porous materials like drywall. They will also diagnose the AC issue, as a cleaning and coil treatment is often necessary to stop the cycle. For a confirmed infestation impacting your living space, a professional approach is the only way to ensure it is resolved effectively and safely.
