How to permanently remove black mold from humid wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. It's been super humid lately and I'm worried it's gotten worse since I last checked. What's the best way to get rid of this for good without having to replace the entire wall?

The black spots behind your wardrobe are likely mold, a common issue in Jumeirah due to our high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. To remove it permanently, you must address both the visible growth and the underlying moisture source.

First, move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow air circulation. For small, surface-level growth (less than 10 square feet), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water or a diluted vinegar solution. Avoid using bleach, as it only lightens the color and does not kill the mold roots penetrating porous materials like plaster.

However, if the mold has deeply infiltrated the drywall or plaster, which is common in persistent cases, surface cleaning is a temporary fix. The wall material itself may need to be cut out and replaced if it is saturated. The permanent solution is to identify and eliminate the moisture source. This is often condensation from an AC unit causing a cold spot on the wall, a hidden plumbing leak, or moisture wicking from the concrete slab.

For a recurring problem like this, a professional inspection is recommended to pinpoint the exact cause with a moisture meter and thermal camera. They can determine if the wall needs specialized drying or replacement. Companies with their own microbiology labs can also take a tape-lift sample to identify the mold species, which is crucial for assessing risk and verifying the remediation was successful.
