Is bathroom mold causing our cough and sinus issues?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month, and I've started getting terrible sinus headaches. I finally pulled back the rubber seal around the shower in our master bathroom and found a ton of black, fuzzy mold growing underneath it. We live in a high-rise in Jumeirah Village Circle and our bathroom has no window. Could this mold be the cause of our health issues, and what's the best way to get rid of it permanently in this humid climate?

Yes, the mold behind your shower seal is very likely contributing to your family's persistent cough and sinus headaches. In a windowless bathroom, especially during Dubai's humid months, steam from showers creates a perfect environment for mold growth. The black, fuzzy growth is often Cladosporium or Stachybotrys (black mold), both of which are known to release spores that cause significant respiratory irritation and allergic reactions.

For a permanent solution, surface cleaning is insufficient. The mold has penetrated behind the seal. You must remove the silicone sealant entirely, as the hyphae (root system) will be deep within the material. Scrub the underlying tile and grout with a dedicated fungicidal cleaner, not just bleach, which only removes surface colour. Allow the area to dry completely—using a fan or dehumidifier for at least 24 hours—before applying a new, high-quality mold-resistant sealant.

To prevent recurrence, controlling humidity is critical. Run the bathroom's exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wipe down wet walls and the shower area with a squeegee. Consider installing a small desiccant dehumidifier in the room if moisture persists. For health symptoms that began a month ago and given the extent of hidden growth you've found, a professional inspection is advised to check for spores that may have circulated into other rooms via your AC system.
