Can I safely clean AC mold myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah seems to be blowing out a damp, earthy smell that’s making my throat itchy. I pulled the filter out yesterday and the area around the unit’s opening looks dark and fuzzy. I’m handy with tools, but I’ve heard mold here can be nasty. Is this something I can safely clean myself with bleach, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold inspection company?

That damp, earthy smell and itchy throat are classic signs of microbial growth in your AC unit, a very common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity and year-round AC use. The dark, fuzzy substance you see is almost certainly mold.

For a small, surface-level amount confined to the filter and the immediate plastic vent opening, a DIY approach can be attempted. You would need to wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Remove the filter and clean the accessible plastic duct opening with a detergent solution, not bleach. Bleach evaporates quickly on porous surfaces and doesn't prevent regrowth. After cleaning, the area must be completely dried.

However, if the visible growth is extensive, appears deep within the unit, or if the smell and symptoms persist after your cleaning, you absolutely need a professional assessment. The mold you see is often just the "bloom"; the main colony is usually deeper inside the ductwork or on the cooling coils where you can't reach it. Disturbing it without proper containment can spread spores throughout your apartment.

In the UAE, professional mold inspection is not about just cleaning; it's a diagnostic process to identify the species and source of moisture. Companies with their own microbiology labs can take air and surface samples to identify the specific type of mold, which determines the remediation protocol. This is crucial for effectively resolving the issue and preventing it from recurring, especially in our climate where condensation in AC units is a constant battle. For your health and to ensure the problem is solved at its root, a professional inspection is the recommended course of action in this scenario.
