Found mold behind sofa bed making kids sick?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and we can't figure out why. I finally pulled out the sofa bed in our Deira apartment to change the sheets and found a huge patch of black mold growing on the wall behind it, probably from a slow AC leak. I’m panicking now that this is what’s making them sick. What are the health risks and should I take them to a doctor immediately?

Yes, the mold is very likely contributing to your children's persistent cough. This is a common issue in Dubai apartments, especially in areas like Deira with older buildings and high humidity. The constant AC use can lead to condensation and hidden leaks, creating perfect conditions for mold behind furniture.
The health risks from this type of exposure are significant, particularly for children. The most common symptoms are respiratory: chronic coughing, wheezing, throat irritation, and worsened asthma or allergies. You should schedule a visit with a pediatrician and explicitly tell them about the mold discovery. They can assess your children and determine if any specific treatment is needed. Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing a large patch can release a massive amount of spores into your apartment's air, potentially making the situation worse. For a case of this size and with health symptoms already present, a professional mold inspection is strongly advised. They will identify the exact moisture source (like the suspected AC leak), contain the area, safely remove the contaminated materials, and verify with testing that the spore count in your air has returned to a safe level. Immediately move the sofa bed away from the wall to improve air circulation. Keep the children out of that room as much as possible until the situation is resolved. The key to preventing recurrence is fixing the root cause of the moisture and ensuring the area is completely dry after remediation. |
