Black mold behind wardrobe: DIY or building management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading on the wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and the room has felt unusually damp since the last round of heavy humidity. What’s the most effective way to deal with this ourselves, or is this a job for building management in a Dubai high-rise?

This is likely due to condensation from the temperature differential between your cold interior wall and the hot, humid exterior air—a very common issue in Dubai. The wall behind the wardrobe is a cold spot with no air circulation, allowing moisture to accumulate and mould to grow.

For a small patch (under one square meter), you can address it yourself. Move the wardrobe away from the wall. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Wipe the mould away with a microfibre cloth dampened with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mould-cleaning detergent. Do not simply paint over it. After cleaning, improve air circulation in that corner and use a desiccant dehumidifier in the room to keep humidity below 60%, which is the critical threshold for mould growth here.

However, if the mould covers a larger area, has penetrated deeply into the drywall, or returns quickly after cleaning, it indicates a more serious moisture issue within the wall cavity itself. This is where building management should be involved. In Dubai, the responsibility for structural issues leading to water intrusion, like a leaking external seal or faulty insulation, typically falls on the building owner or management corporation. You should report it to them, as they are obligated to address the root cause to prevent recurrence.

In many cases, a professional inspection is wise to determine the extent. They can use moisture meters to see how far the dampness has spread inside the wall and take air or surface samples for lab analysis to identify the mould species. This provides concrete evidence for building management and ensures the remediation strategy is appropriate.
