How to remove and prevent AC mold for good?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be making our bedroom in Jumeirah Village Circle smell damp and my husband's been waking up with a stuffy nose. We noticed some black spots starting to form around the vent on the ceiling after the humidity last month. What's the most effective way to clean the mold from the AC unit and prevent it from coming back for good?

The black spots around your vent are a clear sign of condensation has led to microbial growth, a very common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity and year-round AC use. The damp smell and stuffy nose are classic symptoms of exposure to these spores.

For the visible mold on the vent and surrounding ceiling, you can clean it yourself with a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. However, this only addresses the surface. The core issue is inside the AC unit and its ductwork, where condensation provides a constant moisture source.

To prevent it from returning, you must control the moisture. Ensure your AC's drain line is not clogged; a yearly flush with vinegar can help. Keep the drip pan clean. Most importantly, run the AC on a dry mode or lower temperature settings for 30 minutes after use to evaporate residual moisture inside the unit—this is critical in JVC's climate.

For a long-term solution, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can assess the internal evaporator coils and ductwork, which are the true reservoirs for mold. Reputable companies use lab testing to identify the species present and provide before-and-after data to verify the cleaning's effectiveness, as a surface clean alone is rarely sufficient.
