Urgent: treat black mold in bedroom myself or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It’s been humid lately and that wall faces the outside. How urgently do I need to get this professionally treated, or can I handle it myself with bleach this weekend?

That black patch behind boxes is a classic sign of condensation forming on a cooler exterior wall, a very common issue here due to our high humidity and constant AC use. The urgency depends on the size and your household's health.
For a small patch (under one square meter/10 square feet), you can attempt to clean it yourself this weekend, but do not use bleach. Bleach's high water content can actually feed the mould roots inside porous materials like drywall, and its fumes are hazardous in a bedroom. Instead, use a dedicated mould remover spray or a solution of distilled white vinegar and water. Scrub the area thoroughly, let it dry completely, and use a dehumidifier or keep the AC running to prevent immediate recurrence. Always wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection during cleaning. However, DIY is only a surface fix. The mould you see is just the fruiting body; its root system (hyphae) is likely deeper within the wall. In Dubai's climate, if the underlying moisture source—often condensation from the temperature difference between the cold AC interior and hot exterior wall—isn't permanently addressed, it will return. A professional assessment is strongly recommended to identify the exact moisture source and extent of the infestation. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to see inside the wall cavity. For a bedroom, especially if anyone has allergies, asthma, or is immunocompromised, erring on the side of caution is wise. Proper remediation involves isolating the area, removing contaminated porous materials if necessary, and applying antimicrobial treatments to ensure it's truly resolved. |
