How to clean AC mold and need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been making a weird damp smell for a couple of weeks, and this morning I spotted a few small black spots around the vent. We keep the temperature low at night and I'm worried the condensation is causing mold inside the unit itself. What's the best way to clean the inside of an AC unit to prevent this from getting worse, and should I call a professional for this?

That damp smell and visible black spots are classic signs of condensation-related mold growth, a very common issue here due to our high humidity and constant AC use.

For a basic clean, turn off the unit's power at the circuit breaker. Remove the vent cover and wash it with a mild detergent and water. Wipe visible mold from the accessible interior surfaces and the front of the evaporator coils with a cloth dampened with a solution of one part water to one part white vinegar. Allow everything to dry completely before reassembling and turning the power back on.

This DIY approach is only suitable for very minor, surface-level mold on easily reachable parts. If the mold is extensive, inside the unit's deeper ductwork, or if the smell persists after cleaning, you need a professional assessment. Disturbing significant mold growth can spread spores throughout your bedroom. Professionals use HEPA vacuums, antimicrobial cleaners, and techniques that contain the contamination. In Dubai, many buildings also have centralized AC systems where the indoor unit connects to a larger network; cleaning your unit alone may not solve the problem if the central duct is contaminated.

Given the initial signs you've described, a professional inspection is advisable to determine the full extent. They can identify if the issue is isolated to your unit or part of a larger system, which is crucial for an effective and lasting solution.
