AC mold spreading from vent: DIY fix or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the carpet for a couple of weeks, and now I'm seeing a bunch of black spots spreading out from the vent. I've tried wiping it with vinegar, but it just comes back and the whole room smells damp. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call in a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai?

That black spot pattern spreading from your AC vent is a classic sign of a significant mold colony growing inside your AC unit or its ductwork, fed by the ongoing moisture from the leak. Vinegar is a mild, temporary surface solution, but it cannot reach the source or address the root cause.

In Dubai's climate, this situation requires a professional assessment. The high humidity and constant AC use create a perfect environment for mold to thrive and quickly recolonize after a superficial cleaning. The damp smell confirms the growth is active and widespread.

A DIY approach with stronger chemicals is not advisable. Bleach or other harsh cleaners can release harmful fumes into your bedroom air and still fail to eradicate the mold deep within the system. Disturbing it without proper containment can also spread spores throughout the room.

The necessary response has two parts. First, an HVAC technician must fix the condensate drain line leak that is providing the moisture. Second, a mold remediation specialist should inspect the extent of the contamination inside the unit and ducting. They use containment barriers, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatments designed for HVAC systems to properly remove the colony and prevent its return. For a situation involving persistent water damage and visible spreading, a professional remediation company is the recommended course of action to ensure your indoor air quality is restored safely.
