Mold in closet: DIY clean or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed some black spots forming in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an outside wall. It’s gotten worse since the weather got more humid last month. I'm handy and want to just scrub it with bleach myself, but my wife is worried it's a bigger issue hidden in the walls. Is a DIY clean-up enough, or should we definitely call a professional for a proper mold inspection?

Black spots in a closet on an outside wall during humid months are a classic sign of condensation-related mold growth in Dubai. The exterior wall is likely cooler than the room's air, causing moisture to condense inside the wall cavity, especially with year-round AC use.

A DIY scrub with a detergent solution (not bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth) can remove surface mold if the area is small, less than one square meter, and you've fixed the moisture source. However, since it's on an outside wall and has worsened with humidity, there is a high probability the issue is inside the wall itself. Scrubbing the surface will be a temporary fix, as the hidden mold will continue to grow back.

For this specific scenario, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and borescopes to non-invasively check inside the wall cavity for hidden growth and saturation. The goal is to identify the root cause, which is often inadequate insulation or a breach in the vapor barrier, not just clean what you see. Verifiable proof, like lab analysis from an independent microbiology lab, is what confirms the mold type and ensures the right remediation plan is followed. Without addressing the hidden cause, the problem will almost certainly recur.
