How to treat and prevent black mold in Dubai humidity?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has started getting these dark greyish-black spots on the back panel, and it has a really damp, earthy smell. I first noticed it after that really humid spell we had a couple of weeks ago. I’m worried it’s black mold and I want to stop it from spreading before it gets worse. What’s the most effective way to treat this and prevent it from coming back in our Dubai humidity?

Dark greyish-black spots with a damp, earthy smell on an exterior wall are classic signs of a mold issue, often triggered by condensation in our high humidity. The first step is to identify the species, as "black mold" is a broad term; Stachybotrys chartarum is less common but requires careful handling.

For a small area (less than one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Scrub the surface with a mixture of detergent and water. Avoid bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage materials. After cleaning, dry the area thoroughly with a fan. Discard any porous, moldy items like cardboard boxes or fabrics.

However, the smell and location on an exterior wall suggest a deeper moisture problem. The humidity likely caused condensation inside the wall cavity, which you cannot see or dry effectively yourself. This hidden moisture means the mold will almost certainly return.

Prevention is entirely about moisture control. Ensure your AC is running consistently to manage indoor humidity, ideally keeping it below 60%. Verify that the AC drain line is not clogged and is discharging properly. For closets on external walls, leave some space between your belongings and the wall to improve air circulation; a small desiccant dehumidifier inside the closet can also help.

For a persistent problem with a musty odor, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the hidden moisture source. They can use thermal imaging to find condensation points and take air or surface samples for lab analysis to confirm the mold type and guide the appropriate remediation protocol, which is crucial for ensuring it doesn't return.
