How to remove and prevent black mold on window AC?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots forming along the edges of the bedroom window in our Jumeirah apartment, especially on the inside of the AC unit's vent. It seems to get worse whenever the humidity spikes. What's the most effective way to clean this off and prevent it from coming back for good?

The black spots are likely mildew or mould growth from condensation, a very common issue in Dubai due to high humidity and constant AC use. The temperature difference between the cool indoor air and the warm, humid outdoor air causes moisture to form on and around the window and AC vent, creating the perfect environment for it.

For cleaning, first identify the material. For non-porous surfaces like metal AC vents or window glass, use a solution of 70% isopropyl alcohol and 30% water. Spray it on, let it sit for a few minutes, and wipe it away. For painted walls or wooden window frames, a diluted vinegar solution (one part vinegar to one part water) is often safer to prevent damage to the finish. Always wear a mask and gloves during cleaning to avoid inhaling spores.

Prevention is more important than repeated cleaning. The goal is to control the moisture. Ensure your AC is set to a consistent temperature, ideally around 22-24°C, to minimize drastic temperature swings that cause condensation. Run the AC's dry mode frequently, especially during high humidity periods, to remove excess moisture from the air. Improve air circulation around the window by ensuring furniture isn't blocking the vent and using a small fan if necessary.

If the growth is extensive, has penetrated porous materials like drywall, or returns quickly after a thorough cleaning, the issue may be more serious. In such cases, a professional inspection can identify the specific mould type and its root cause, such as a faulty AC drain line or inadequate insulation, which is needed for a permanent solution.
