Is mold exposure dangerous for my young children?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since the heavy rains last month, and I’m starting to worry. I’ve just noticed a patch of black and green mold spreading along the corner of their bedroom wall, right behind the wardrobe where it’s always a bit damp. What are the actual health risks for my 4 and 6 year olds from being exposed to this, and should I take them to a doctor immediately?

Mold exposure can be particularly problematic for young children, as their developing respiratory systems are more sensitive. The primary health risks from the type of damp wall mold you're describing are respiratory irritation, persistent coughing, wheezing, and worsening of allergy or asthma symptoms. The constant cough your children have is a common reaction to inhaling mold spores.

Given the recent heavy rains and the damp corner behind the wardrobe, this is a classic scenario for mold growth in Dubai's climate. High humidity and condensation, often trapped behind furniture, create an ideal environment for mold. You should absolutely have them seen by a pediatrician to rule out any secondary infections and to manage their current symptoms. Inform the doctor about the mold discovery.

For the mold itself, this requires immediate action. Do not attempt to clean significant growth yourself, as disturbing it can release a large number of spores into the air. A professional inspection is recommended to identify the moisture source—whether it's a leak from the rains or chronic condensation—and to assess the full extent. Remediation should be handled by a certified company that follows industry standards for containment and removal to prevent cross-contamination.

Moving forward, keep the wardrobe slightly away from the wall to improve air circulation, use a dehumidifier in the room, and ensure your AC unit is well-maintained to help control humidity levels.
