How to safely remove mold from damp bedroom wall?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when I moved the furniture to clean after the recent humidity. The wall feels damp and there are these black and greenish spots spreading up from the skirting board.
What's the most effective way to get rid of this safely and permanently, and should I call my landlord first or just handle it myself?

Move the wardrobe away from the wall immediately to allow air circulation and prevent the mold from worsening. For your family's safety, especially with children coughing, do not attempt to scrub it yourself. Disturbing the mold will release a high concentration of spores into the bedroom air, which can significantly aggravate respiratory symptoms.
In Dubai, this is almost certainly a landlord responsibility. The damp wall indicates a persistent moisture issue, likely from a hidden plumbing leak in the wall or, very commonly, condensation from an AC supply line or chilled water pipe running inside that wall. The recent high humidity has simply made the existing problem visible. The landlord is obligated under Dubai rental law to address the underlying structural cause, not just the visible mold. Contact your landlord first with clear photos and a request for a professional inspection. The remediation must be handled by a company that uses containment barriers, HEPA filtration air scrubbers, and proper PPE to protect your family from cross-contamination. After removal, the root cause—the moisture source—must be identified and repaired. Only then can the wall be treated and rebuilt. A proper remediation company will provide before-and-after lab test results to verify the spore count in the room has returned to a safe level. Until it's resolved, keep the bedroom well-ventilated and consider using a dehumidifier. |
