How to safely remove and prevent black mold in UAE?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It’s been incredibly humid lately and I’m worried it’s spreading because our clothes have a damp feel. What’s the most effective way to clean this safely and prevent it from coming back, especially with our UAE summers?

Black mold in a closet on an interior wall is a classic sign of condensation due to high humidity and temperature differences, exacerbated by our UAE climate. The damp feel on your clothes confirms high moisture levels are present.

For safe removal, first address the moisture source. This is often condensation from an AC supply vent nearby or general high humidity being trapped in the enclosed space. Wearing an N95 mask and gloves, scrub the visible patch with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning detergent. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the colour and does not kill the root structure. Dispose of any cleaning cloths immediately.

To prevent recurrence, you must improve air circulation and control humidity. Leave the closet doors open regularly. Consider using a small renewable desiccant dehumidifier inside the closet. Check if an AC vent is directly causing the cold surface; redirecting the airflow can help. For interior walls, the mold could be a surface issue or indicate a deeper problem within the wall cavity if there is a hidden plumbing leak or significant thermal bridging.

If the patch is larger than one square meter, returns after cleaning, or you detect a musty odor, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the exact condensation points and take air or tape-lift samples for lab analysis to confirm the mold type. This diagnostic approach is crucial for effective, long-lasting remediation, especially in our humid environment where mold can recur quickly without addressing the root cause.
