Is my Dubai apartment's mold causing kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's been growing in the corner of our master bathroom for the past couple of months. It's worst behind the toilet where it doesn't get much air, and the AC just makes the whole room feel damp all the time. Is this kind of persistent mold exposure in a Dubai apartment common, and should I be taking them to a doctor to get checked out?

Yes, it very well could be. Persistent mold exposure, especially for children, is a common trigger for respiratory irritation like chronic coughing, congestion, and worsened allergies. The damp, humid conditions you describe in a Dubai bathroom are a perfect environment for mold growth, exacerbated by year-round AC use that creates constant condensation.

You should take them to a doctor to rule out other causes and discuss the mold exposure. For immediate action, increase ventilation in the bathroom by running the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after showers and keeping the door open. Wipe down wet surfaces and address the visible mold with a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution, but avoid bleach as it often only removes the surface color.

Given the persistence over months and its location in a poorly ventilated area, this indicates an ongoing moisture issue that DIY cleaning won't solve. The AC unit itself could be contributing to the room's dampness if its drain line is clogged or it's not effectively removing humidity. A professional inspection can identify the exact moisture source—whether it's a hidden leak, insufficient ventilation, or AC-related—and recommend targeted remediation. For health concerns linked to a specific contaminant, verified lab testing is the only way to identify the mold species and confirm the source.
