Black mold in Dubai apartment: call management or specialist?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It must have been there a while because our clothes have a damp, earthy smell. This is on the inside wall of our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle. What's the best way to handle this in Dubai's humidity—should I call the building management first or get a specialist to look at it myself?

Contact building management first. In Dubai, landlords and building owners are generally responsible for addressing structural issues causing mold, like leaks or insulation problems. Document the mold with photos and report it formally to them. They should send a maintenance team to investigate and fix the source of the moisture.
While you wait for their response, move the storage boxes away from the wall to improve air circulation. The damp, earthy smell on your clothes indicates prolonged exposure; wash or dry-clean them. For a small patch, you can carefully clean the surface with a diluted vinegar solution, but this only addresses visible growth, not the root cause. Given JVC's humidity and that this is on an interior wall, the issue is likely chronic condensation from the AC or a slow pipe leak inside the wall. If management is unresponsive or cannot identify the source, a specialist inspection is your next step. They use thermal imaging and moisture meters to find hidden dampness that building maintenance often misses. A lab test can also confirm the mold type, which is useful if health symptoms are present. The key is stopping the moisture first; without that, mold will return regardless of cleaning. |
