Should I remove black mold immediately or wait?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity. Given how quickly things can get worse here, is this something I need to deal with immediately over the weekend, or can it wait until I call a professional next week?

Yes, you should address this immediately. Given Dubai's high humidity and the fact it's already behind furniture, this indicates a persistent moisture issue that won't resolve itself. The health symptoms you're describing, especially in children, are a significant reason to act quickly.

For now, limit exposure. Keep the bedroom door closed and the children out of the room. Do not attempt to scrub or disturb the mold yourself, as this can release a large number of spores into the air and potentially worsen the coughing. Your priority over the weekend should be to improve ventilation in that room; run the AC continuously on a dry mode setting if you have it, as dehumidification is key to slowing its growth.

This situation requires professional assessment. What appears as surface mold is often just the visible part of a larger problem within the wall or behind the tiles. A proper inspection identifies the moisture source—often condensation from AC ducts, a small plumbing leak, or capillary rise from the slab—and the specific species to gauge health risk. Remediation is not just about removal; it's about fixing the root cause to prevent rapid regrowth, which is common here.

Call for assessments early next week. Reputable providers will use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the source and can conduct air or swab sampling to identify the mold type, which informs the remediation plan.
