Mold behind toy chest: health risks for kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and we can't figure out why. I finally pulled out their toy chest from the corner of their bedroom in our Jumeirah villa and found a patch of black mold on the wall behind it, probably from the humidity. I'm panicking now that they've been breathing this in. What are the specific health risks for young children and what's the very first step I should take?

Black mold exposure can cause respiratory irritation in children, particularly those with allergies or asthma. Common symptoms include persistent coughing, wheezing, nasal congestion, and skin irritation. The risk is higher in Dubai's humid climate, where condensation behind furniture is a frequent issue.

The immediate first step is to move the children to a different, well-ventilated room and keep them away from the affected area. Do not attempt to scrub the mold yourself, as this can aerosolize spores. For a small patch like this, a professional mold inspection can identify the species and the moisture source. In villas, this is often due to high indoor humidity or a minor, unnoticed leak.

Since the wall is affected, remediation will likely involve more than surface cleaning to prevent recurrence. A proper assessment will determine if the drywall or insulation needs replacement. To manage humidity long-term, ensure your AC is serviced regularly and consider using a dehumidifier, especially during the more humid summer months.
