How to remove black mold from shower ceiling?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment for two years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower wall meets the ceiling. It’s been incredibly humid lately and I think the bathroom fan isn't strong enough. What’s the best way to handle this myself, or should I call my building management first?

Black mould in shower corners is common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can often handle it yourself safely.

Start by mixing a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle. Spray the area thoroughly, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff-bristled brush. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. If vinegar doesn't work, a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to four parts water) can be used, but ensure the room is extremely well-ventilated. After cleaning, the most critical step is addressing the moisture source. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet surfaces. Check if your fan is actually moving air; if a piece of toilet paper doesn't stick to the vent cover when it's on, the fan is likely inadequate.

If the mould covers a larger area, keeps returning despite your efforts, or you notice a musty smell spreading, it's time for professional assessment. In apartments, you can notify building management, as the issue could be related to a faulty ventilation system shared with other units. A professional inspection can identify the mould species and the exact moisture source, which is crucial for a permanent solution, especially if the mould is within the ceiling void.
