Could mold under our carpet be causing our cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled back the corner of the carpet in our ground-floor bedroom in Jumeirah and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold, probably from all the humidity. We’ve been sleeping right on top of it. Could this be the reason for our constant headaches and sore throats?

Yes, the mold under your carpet is very likely contributing to your family's persistent coughs, headaches, and sore throats. In Dubai's high humidity, ground-floor carpets are prime locations for mold growth, as condensation and moisture become trapped. The continuous exposure to mold spores in your bedroom, especially over weeks, is a common irritant to the respiratory system.
For a situation this advanced, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Disturbing the mold yourself can release a large cloud of spores throughout your home. A proper assessment will identify the exact species and the full extent of the moisture problem, which is critical for effective remediation. In many cases, the carpet and underlying padding will need to be safely removed and disposed of, and the subfloor treated to prevent regrowth. Focus on improving ventilation in that room immediately. Run a dehumidifier if possible and ensure your AC is functioning correctly, as proper climate control is the best defense against humidity-driven mold in the UAE. Until the issue is resolved, consider relocating everyone, especially the children, to a different sleeping area to minimize exposure. |
