Dehumidifier or open doors to prevent closet mold?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in my Jumeirah apartment has started getting these black speckles on the leather bags and shoes I stored there. It’s been super humid lately and I’m worried the lack of air circulation is causing mold. What’s the best way to prevent this from coming back after I clean it—should I get a dehumidifier or just leave the closet doors open all the time?

Leaving doors open helps, but in Dubai's humidity, it's often not enough. A dehumidifier is the more reliable solution for a sealed closet space, as it actively controls the moisture level that mold needs to grow.

Aim to maintain indoor humidity below 60%, ideally between 40-50%. A compact, consumer-grade dehumidifier with a built-in hygrometer is effective for this. The constant air circulation from its operation also helps prevent the stagnant, damp conditions mold thrives in. Ensure the closet is not over-packed, as tight spaces restrict airflow even with a dehumidifier running.

For a comprehensive approach, combine both methods: run a dehumidifier inside the closet and leave the doors ajar when possible to integrate with your apartment's overall climate. Since your AC is your primary dehumidifier, ensure it's serviced regularly and that its vents are not blocked, allowing cool, dry air to circulate throughout the apartment.

If the mold returns persistently after cleaning and controlling humidity, the issue may be more systemic. In many UAE apartments, the problem can stem from a compromised thermal break in the wall, leading to constant condensation inside the closet that is invisible to you. In such cases, a professional inspection using a thermal camera can identify these hidden cold spots, which is the only way to find a permanent solution.
