How to permanently remove mold from a seaside closet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has been smelling damp for a while, and I finally pulled everything out to find a bunch of black mold spots on the back wall. We run the AC constantly, but it's the wall facing the sea so I guess the humidity is just too much. What's the best long-term solution to treat this and stop it from coming back every season?

The damp smell and black spots indicate active growth, which is common in seaside villas due to the high ambient humidity and condensation on cooler walls. The first step is to identify and address the moisture source. In a closet on an exterior wall, the most likely culprits are condensation from the temperature difference between the AC-cooled room and the warm, humid air penetrating the wall, or a minor leak.

For immediate treatment, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover can scrub away the visible growth. However, this is only a temporary fix. The wall must be completely dried using dehumidifiers and fans before any repainting or sealing occurs. Applying mold-resistant primer and paint is crucial for prevention.

The long-term solution requires reducing the humidity at its source. Ensure your AC unit is properly sized and functioning, as an overworked unit may not remove enough moisture from the air. Consider adding a standalone dehumidifier in the room, especially during the more humid winter months. Improving air circulation around the closet by not overpacking it and occasionally leaving the doors open can help significantly. For a permanent assessment, a professional inspection can identify if there are underlying structural issues, like insufficient insulation in the external wall, that need to be remedied to break the cycle of condensation. In severe cases, this level of intervention is what stops it from returning every season.
