How to treat closet mold and prevent it returning?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has a persistent damp smell, and I just found a few black spots on the back wall and some of my leather bags. We run the AC constantly, but it seems like the humidity is still getting trapped in there, especially after the recent foggy mornings. What’s the best way to treat this myself and what can I add to the closet to stop the mold from coming back?

First, address the source of moisture. In Dubai's climate, closets on exterior walls are prone to condensation from the temperature differential between the cool interior and the hot, humid exterior. The constant AC use can create a microclimate of stagnant, cool, humid air perfect for mold growth.

For treatment, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Wipe the visible spots on the wall with a microfiber cloth dampened with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product. For the leather bags, wipe them down with a dilute vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 3 parts water) and allow them to dry completely in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight. Do not use bleach, as it can damage surfaces and doesn't prevent regrowth.

To prevent it from returning, you must improve air circulation and control humidity inside the closet. Leave the closet doors slightly ajar for a few hours each day. Consider installing battery-operated humidity absorbers or a small, standalone desiccant dehumidifier inside the closet. Ensure the room's AC vents are not blocked and are directing air into the closet space. Check that the villa's AC drain line is not clogged, as this can cause excess humidity.

If the smell persists or the mold returns quickly after cleaning, the growth is likely more extensive behind the wall or in the insulation. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is needed to find the hidden source. For villas in Jumeirah, this is common, and a proper assessment can identify if there's a construction-level issue, like insufficient vapor barriers, that needs addressing.
