How to remove black mold from closet wall in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it's been incredibly humid lately. What's the fastest and safest way to get rid of this ourselves, or is this a job for a professional cleaning company here in Dubai?

Black mold in closets is common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation on exterior walls. The fastest and safest DIY removal method depends on the size. For a patch smaller than one square foot, you can handle it yourself.

First, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Isolate the area by closing the closet door and covering the floor with plastic. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water in a spray bottle. Spray the moldy area generously, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush. Wipe clean with a damp cloth and dry the area thoroughly. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and can push moisture deeper into the wall.

The critical step is addressing the moisture source. This is likely condensation from the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the humid outside wall. Improve air circulation by not overpacking the closet and leaving a small gap between the wall and your stored items. Run a dehumidifier or your AC more frequently to keep humidity below 60%.

If the mold covers more than a square foot, has penetrated deep into the drywall, or returns after cleaning, it's a job for a professional. They have industrial HEPA vacuums, antimicrobial treatments, and moisture meters to find the root cause. In many cases, the wall cavity needs inspection. For health safety, especially with infants or anyone with respiratory issues, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the mold species.
